Gothic & Lolita Bible (and calendar give away!)

The Gothic and Lolita Bible (GLB) is one of the most important things to a lolita. It's been about 9 years since volume 1 was released!  The book has always a great way to see new/old brand items from a variety of brands all in one place, like a lolita year book. As well as to see photo shoots featuring different brands. Recently when looking through some of my older issues, I realized just how much lolita has changed. Also how brand identity has changed.
I was flipping though my first volume and found some old ads that really show how some brands have changed! Look at this angelic pretty ad

look at that bonnet! it's comforting to know somethings don't change. However in this volume this is really the only angelic pretty feature. There is no section featuring their designs, odd.  One of the other old ads I found a little odd was for Victorian Maiden.

Some brands I feel haven't really changed all that much, Like Metamorphose and Baby, The Stars Shine Bright.

On the left is metamorphose, this is one of my favorite prints from them. The version pictured is on a shinny satin fabric.  To the right is Baby, The Stars Shine Bright, it's a little longer and the head dress is a bit awkward then their designs now.  Over all the older bibles have some great rare items in them it's fun to see the original price.

I want to say thank you to everyone for reading! I have a gift for one lucky reader leave a comment over the next week (ends 01/31/10) and I will randomly (via random.org) pick one person to recieve:
A 2010 Baby, The stars shine bright Calendar!!

We have a winner!!

Thank you everyone for reading and keep checking back for more Give a ways!

  2. A lot of things featured in the older bibles feel awkward now compared to today's styles... like that Baby headdress... and the top hat in the Victorian Maiden ad. It seems like it took a while for the style to really get its bearings.

  4. It's really fun comparing some adverts together!!

Although, when i was doing my fashion marketing project, I was comparing Japanese Brand adverts to Western ones, and it's really quite amusing as to how they differ. Japanese ones are reeeeeally simple!!

  10. Wow, I wasn't aware of the fashion that many years ago, so I'm not so familiar with the original trends. Neat!

  11. Man, I miss the old styles of Lolita. Sadly, it was out of fashion before I had a chance to wear it myself, hahah~ xD

  12. Everything here is very subdued as compared to the OTT sweet nowadays.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hard to believe AP was once non-sweet haha.

  14. How I love that Baby black and white ad... it's so charmingly old school!

  16. Ahaaa, it's really cool to see how the styles have changed over time- even more so when it's in our hands by way of a book! I wish I had some GLBs, but I'm only just starting to get pieces....and this year or next, I plan to get a Meta LP~

    Where d'you get brand calenders? o.o;;

    Long live Lolita!

  17. Looks like a promising blog that I might enjoy in the future.
I also have that first bible, and every time I skim through it I'm amazed at how some brands have changed their image and quality :O!

  18. Nice post, I love looking back at old prices too and see how much they have inflated, rofl.

People should start investments in lolita rather than the stock market. XD

  19. Oh, back when Mana was king. As much as there are somethings about the fashion now I don't like, I can't say I miss those days too much.

  20. Angelic Pretty really has changed! I really like their new style, but it is so interesting how even the lolita style grows and changes just as mainstream~! (^_^) It makes me wonder what will appear next!

  21. I have a GLB Vol. 4, and it's so much fun to look back at the way the styles used to be. There also seemed to be a lot more Gothic clothing in the older bibles, too. I some ways it annoys me that sweet lolita has invaded so much, but I wear sweet myself, so I can't complain too much.

  22. Some people think the style doesn't change much, but it really does. It's not nearly as stagnant as some thing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah I was looking through the older GLBs and comparing it with the new ones too. It's funny how AP changed so much o_O

I like Alice Deco better than GLBs though, as they feature a greater range in style.

  24. It's really interesting to see how much Victorian Maiden has changed over the years!

  25. A lot of sweet styles originaly looked much more classic. I'm a classic Lolita so it has me gnashing my teeth.

  26. I like to see old bibles! But really, I can't stand the shoes lolies used to wear xD

  27. O__O Victorian Maiden used to be so different! So dark!

Sweet used to be similar to shiro, and more simple... now it's all OTT the top and stuff. @__@
    I think I like it both ways. xD;

  28. Lolita fashion sure has changed alot since then! It's interesting to compare the completely different styles of AP from before and what it is today~

  33. Wow, VM looks a lot more gothic in that ad. Cool. And I actually feel like BTSSB has changed a lot, at least in the arena of prints.

I like your commentary. :) It would be fun to see more images.

i am a bit new to lolita fashion, but my interest is blooming. i think i will do some reasearch on my own about the look of popular brands in the past. i look foreward to learning a lot from your blog~

  41. Man....you're right....GLB, heh, lolita fashion in general is very different than it used to be.

Anyway, I would love to win the calendar. It would be my first thing from the brand. D:

  42. Nice to see a new loli blog! Sadly, my older GLBs went missing. I think someone borrowed them a long time ago and never gave them back. :( I've got to collect them all over again.

And yay for a calendar giveaway! It would go so well in my new pink room ^_^ **crosses fingers**

I wish that the American version of the magazine hadn't gone down the toilet...I liked the magazine if they could have offered it in it's more original format.

  49. I'm not too sure how lolita fashion was like in the past, but I do have some idea that it was leaning more towards gothic lolita than any other subgroup of lolita fashion. I like how there are so many subgroups now to suit different personalities.

  50. your blog looks really nice. Good luck with it!

    ReplyDelete
  51. whoa, weird @_@ where could the style go from here if its already changed that much?

    ReplyDelete
  52. ^^ I love that picture of the old Baby coord. It's really a classic Lolita look, though outdated, that shows "where we came from".

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh, I think Baby has chaged, too. But they're one of the brands besides meta that still release oldschool dresses. And Moitie in some parts. Innocent World is still very classy, though. I like those series. ^^

  54. It's rather hard to get GLBs over here, which is why I had to download them :/ I love it though! I'm still a bit of a newbie and it was like looking back at how lolita has evolved the first time I browsed through it haha! I love that Meta dress, I think it looks better than some of their current stuff :/

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'll mark your blog on favourites and check it some time.
Yeah.. I think it's very interesting to watch old GLBs and shootings from older days!!!

  61. We often hear "Oh, wearing black and white is oldschool" It'S interesting to see how the fashion change and I'm very curious how it would change the next years! :D

I'd like to join the giveaway too, yay Btssb calendar *___*

    ReplyDelete
  62. It's amazing how much everything has changed! I think much of the old stuff is prettier though, hopefully it'll come back into fashion sometime soon =)
And that calender looks awesome *_*

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love 'em, the old Bibles. Although I really don't like the AP stuff in the advert... I liked them best a little later, when they had loads of Imai Kira prints. Less so with their current saccharine insanity, although they're still quite fun.
And I think that Baby co-ordinate was the reason I didn't immediately get into black-and-white lolita... it's overwhelming!
IW isn't that much different now though, maybe; more colours perhaps? I've their black velvet skirt that was in the first Bible and it looks fairly in line with their modern stuff. Although they're more or less my favourite brand, so I'll probably never hate anything of theirs.

    ReplyDelete
  64. yay for a new lolita blog! im excited to read more in the future ^.^

    ReplyDelete
  65. AP was kinda simple cute, but now there're much OTT. However I like both: the old things and the new ones.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I really love the old AP designs. there are much chuter than the new prints ><

I'm really excited to read more entrys in this blog <3
    Have Fun ^-^

  67. I think my first GLB ever was issue number 11...
I remember looking at the magazine a lot, and loving the clothes shown there.
The fashion has evolved a lot, but I kind of like where it went. (Apart from the really OTT maybe)
    More colors, yay!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Meta used to have such lovely clothes. ;D
I've only purchased the older GLBs, too, even though some of the models had limp hair and whatnot... (They looked more like ordinary people, I think?)

    ReplyDelete
  69. i also notice that in erlier volumes there were much more photoshoots (mana, hitomi etc) i miss them

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think it's pretty interesting to see how each of the brands went off in their own directions, with their own styles. :3
